Darker fruit compared to the Fixin Village, this is still well defined with light violet aromas percolating up with aeration. This too is quite aromatically cool and restrained with its combination of essence of red currant, cherry, lavender, soft spice elements and admirably subtle wood. The juicy and impressively concentrated flavors flash excellent intensity and focused power while displaying the same gorgeous texture as the Echezeaux, all wrapped in a hugely long, serious and impeccably well-balanced finale. This is beautifully refined, indeed while it may seem like an oxymoron given Bonnes Mares’ well-deserved reputation for power and muscle, this is more a wine of finesse. Even so, this should have no trouble aging and improving for close to 20 years. Drink 2036+. |

The sleeker and more intense big-bodied flavors possess excellent delineation that carries over to the naturally sweet, mineral laden and sneaky long finish. This needs to add depth though the underlying material very much appears to be present for that to occur. As I have observed many times in these pages, volatile acidity is something that all wines have, it’s the degree that matters and whether the nose would bother most people is hard to judge but it did me. The palate is medium-bodied with smooth tannins. Quite a polished Beaune Grèves, there is a sumptuousness to this wine with a lightly spiced finish, though it doesn't quite have the complexity or mineralité of its peers. I've had better bottles. | VM 92 (12/2023): The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru has a lot of reduction on the nose, and the wood is far less integrated than the others in the flight. It certainly doesn't hold a torch to Rousseau's Cazetiers. The palate is medium-bodied, with a firm structure, good backbone and commendable sapidity. It is a bit backward and doesn't have the complexity of its peers toward the finish. Again, there is a touch of reduction. It may well find its groove with continued aeration, but I will be prudent with my score for now. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting. Neal Martin. |

The wonderfully vibrant middle weight plus flavors brim with both dry extract and minerality on the palate drenching, very firm and moderately austere finish where a similar level of warmth slowly emerges. This bitter chocolate-inflected effort should age well but it's necessary to be tolerant of noticeable warmth. |

| VM 96 (12/2023): The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru, which I never tasted from barrel, has a sublime bouquet that is the paragon of Pinot's transparency. Perfumed with joyous red fruit, crushed stone and a touch of wilted rose petal, the aromatics whisk you to the famed walled vineyard. The palate is beautifully balanced with slightly chalky tannins and a surfeit of energy and tension. It’s quite linear and strict toward the finish that just loses its initial crystalline quality. VM 92-94 (12/2020): The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru was a little more reduced than Gouges’s other cuvées, opening gradually to reveal blackberry, wild hedgerow and incense. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, lithe and silky in the mouth, and fleshy with a judicious touch of white pepper toward the finish. The shortfall in grip and substance is sufficiently compensated with elegance. Neal Martin.
BH 90-92 (1/2021): This is also quite firmly reduced and unreadable at present. Otherwise there is equally good energy and delineation to the slightly more refined though still dense and muscular medium-bodied flavors that possess just a bit more depth on the similar finish that is muscular, serious and youthfully austere if not especially rustic. VM 95-97 (12/2020): The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru has, as I anticipated given the Premier Cru in question, the most generous and opulent bouquet among Grivot’s range, featuring precocious, vivacious red cherries, blueberry, violet and orange sorbet aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins. A voluminous and extravagant Les Suchots delivering layers of sorbet-fresh black fruit on the persistent finish. There is a thrilling crescendo, a bravura about this Les Suchots. Neal Martin.
BH 92-95 (1/2021): A wide-ranging nose freely exhibits its array of soy, hoisin, star anise, sandalwood and blue pinot fruit aromas. The lavishly rich but focused full-bodied flavors possess excellent mid-palate concentration while displaying excellent power on the mouth coating, sappy and compact finish where the supporting tannins are firm to the point of inducing austerity while making it clear that this too is built for long-term aging. Most impressive. |

There is a lovely texture to the otherwise reasonably concentrated and moderately powerful flavors that also coat the palate with sappy dry extract that also helps partially buffer the solidly firm and slightly raspy tannic spine shaping the austere, mildly warm and compact finale. This is clearly going to require time to reach its full potential though it's not so structured that it couldn't be approached after 6 to 8 years. Drink 2031+. |

This offers a completely different expression compared to the Amoureuses but one that is equally interesting. This too possesses superb development potential though patience definitely advised. This too is quite aromatically restrained though aggressive swirling does eventually coax the pure and elegant aromas to emerge and when they do, they are almost a hypothetical blend of the Amoureuses and the Bonnes Mares. The concentrated, powerful and decidedly muscular flavors retain plenty of refinement and minerality that conclude in a wonderfully complex and superbly long finale. The mid-palate texture is akin to rolling rocks around in the mouth and the finish just goes on and on. This too is brilliant, and the word Zen definitely comes to mind. Drink 2041+. Don't miss! |
