WS 90 (10/1994): Impressive finesse for the vintage, with beautiful, fresh tobacco, cedar and coffee aromas and flavors. Full-bodied and very silky with a fine, long finish. Drinkable now.
WA 88 (3/1989): A success for this very good, yet surprisingly inconsistent vintage, the Lynch-Bages 1983 is a full-blown, big, ripe, gutsy Pauillac, with an intense bouquet of ground beef and black currant fruit, and deep, rich, briery flavors. Quite full bodied, alcoholic, and long, this substantial wine has a heady, alcoholic finish with the tannins quickly melting away. Anticipated maturity: Now-2002. |

WA 94 (1/1998): A stunning wine, Pichon-Lalande's 1983 has been gorgeous to drink for a number of years. It is one of the finest 1983s, especially for a northern Medoc. The color remains a dark ruby/purple, with slight lightening at the edge. The knock-out nose of roasted herbs, sweet, jammy black currants, and pain grille is followed by a full-bodied, gorgeously concentrated and well-proportioned wine with low acidity, plenty of glycerin, and a savory, highly extracted, fleshy mouthfeel. This has always been one of the stars of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: Now-2008.
WS 92 (11/1997): This wine has always been underrated. Shows wonderful aromas of chocolate, berry and earth. Full-bodied, with full, velvety tannins and a sweet berry finish. Drink now or hold.--Pichon-Lalande vertical. |

VM 87 (7/2024): Alexandre Thienpont has always upheld that the 1983 Vieux Château Certan is superior to the 1982. This has more freshness and delineation on the nose, dark berry fruit, dried rose petals and a touch of sous-bois. It is not the most complex bouquet, but it is as good as, say, Petrus, though not the standout Lafleur! The palate is medium-bodied with rigid tannins. Compact and saline, though again, I find the finish a bit dour and seems to dry out in the glass. Large formats could be interesting, but overall, despite the attractive aromatics, I cannot concur with Alexandre based on this showing. Tasted at the VCC vertical in Etikhove. (Drink between 2024-2030). Neal Martin.
WA 86 (12/2002): Beginning to break apart, this very herbal, even minty Vieux Chateau Certan shows a dark plum color, hints of prunes, raisins, and old saddle leather intermixed with a hint of mushroom. The wine seems to be in total freefall, but there is still some merit to it. Anticipated maturity: Drink up. |
